Time has not stood still since the barbaric rape of "Ms Jyoti Singh, also referred to as 'Nirbhaya' in Delhi and her tragic death in the Singapore hospital. Almost two years have passed since the incident but Nirbhaya still remains at the center of our collective consciousness. The incident not only shook the nation but the ripples of the shock were felt globally too. It awoke India to the injustice and violence against women like never before and led to the demand of stringent laws. It is time that we make Nirbhaya the symbol of courage and resistance by immortalizing her spirit by creating a National Day in the memory of every woman, who has suffered abuse and violence in the country and anywhere in the world.
The main aim of the New Light team has always been to promote gender equality through education and life skills. The work pivots on the principle of reduction of gender violence and abuse, thereby creating a just society with millions of Nirbhaya everywhere.
As a continuous effort towards the campaign, New Light is sending a mass petition to the His Excellency, President of India to declare December 16 as 'Nirbhaya Diwas', to build awareness about the ongoing violence against women.
It is time to make 'Nirbhaya' the symbol of courage and resistance by immortalizing her spirit by creating a National Day in the memory of every woman who has suffered abuse and violence in the country and anywhere in the world. Therefore we strive to make 16th December 'Nirbhaya Diwas' - a day to mark Zero Tolerance for rape in India.
Let us join our hands together and fight against the violence against women and spread the campaign by spreading awareness about signing the petition and bring much more impact to the campaign.
This is an individual gender rights and protection movement and has no political link.
