Syamatara

In July 2003 New Light set up a multi-functional shelter for the children of the Dalit community located behind the crematorium in Keoratala, Kolkata. The dalits (meaning the oppressed in Hindi) of that area comprise mainly of Doms, a caste that has traditionally been marked as 'untouchables' because they take care of burning the dead bodies.

After five years of being in operation today the shelter offers all the services to the targeted community that were originally offered at the Kalighat shelter. It was with the aspiration of changing the lives of the young ones in that community through education and healthcare support that New Light set up this shelter.

Even though the constitution of India guarantees the dalit people exactly the same rights as every other citizen of the country their condition continues to be more than morbid. It was with the aspiration of changing the lives of the young ones in this small population located at Keoratala, through education and healthcare support that New Light set up this shelter.

In association with "BONO Direkthilfe e.V. and Rheno-Baltia-help-for-India, the New Light Shelter II was given a face lift, renovated and inaugurated in a grand way by the name of New Light Syamatara in April 2017.

The brand new and expanded shelter will cater to the children of the Dalit community and is located behind the crematorium in Keoratala, Kolkata.
